Punjab’s 37 Universities Oppose Education Minister’s Control Over Syndicates

Punjab’s 37 public university vice-chancellors (VCs) have rejected the Higher Education Minister's appointment as the all-university chairman syndicate. Secretary of Higher Education Dr Farrukh Naveed presented the idea of all the university VCs in a meeting of the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC).

All VCs opposed this idea as it might increase political influence and bureaucratic control. The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FPOASA) alerted about protests across the province, if anyone tried to sabotage university autonomy.

They asked for appointing a regular chairperson for Punjab HEC by removal of the secretary post. Professors and VCs have asked higher authorities to intervene in this situation and ensure the transparency of the educational institutions.
