The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) has asked the government to restore a 25% tax rebate for teachers and researchers.
They argued that teachers deserve this tax rebate just like cricketers for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
FAPUASA President Dr. Amjad Abbas Magsi criticized by calling this unjustly handling “preferential treatment” for international sportspersons and ignoring the most prestigious institute of Education.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) revoked the rebate in December 2024 and caused significant salary deductions in salaries. In June 2024, the budget uplift that tax rebate was abruptly withdrawn. Universities have been told to deduct full taxes to recover the deficit of the last three years, which is unjust.
Dr Magsi warned of educational crises, citing chronic underfunding, bureaucracy interference, and controversial changes in governance. He stressed that public sector universities primarily put middle- and lower-income students at risk of dropping their education.
