Smog Situation in Punjab:
Punjab has witnessed a slight improvement in its smog crisis, bringing hope for better air quality and reduced health risks. Lahore, which previously recorded alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) levels exceeding 1600, now reports a significant drop to 484, as per IQAir, a global air monitoring service. Though the air remains hazardous, this improvement has prompted authorities to revise decisions about school closures in certain districts.
Schools Reopening Announcement
Following an official notification, schools in the Rawalpindi Division and nearby districts will reopen on
19th November 2024, thanks to better weather conditions. The affected districts include:
- Rawalpindi
- Attock
- Chakwal
- Jhelum
Previously, schools were closed until
24th November 2024, but with improved air quality, government and private institutions in these areas are set to resume regular operations.
Artificial Rain: An Innovative Step
In an effort to combat smog, the Punjab government conducted a successful trial of
artificial rain using local cloud seeding technology. Collaborating with Pakistan Army’s Scientific Research and Development, Army Aviation, PARCO, and the Environmental Protection Agency, the trial resulted in rainfall in Jhelum and Gujar Khan. This innovative approach aims to improve air quality during future smog seasons.
Pending Decisions for Other Cities
For cities outside the Rawalpindi Division, the government is yet to announce reopening dates. If no further delays are imposed, schools are expected to resume classes on
25th November 2024. Updates on this decision will be shared soon.
Health Advisory for Students
While schools reopen, parents are encouraged to prioritize their children's health. Despite improvements, the air quality remains concerning. Follow these precautions:
- Ensure children wear anti-pollution masks.
- Limit outdoor activities, especially after school hours.
- Monitor air quality levels regularly.
Looking Ahead
The easing of smog has provided some relief, but it underscores the urgency for sustainable solutions to air pollution. Initiatives like artificial rain, stricter industrial regulations, and awareness campaigns will play a vital role in creating long-term improvements.
