Driverless Car Project and AI
AI is transforming a China-imported regular electronic car into a fully autonomous vehicle. The primary AI-driven features include:
- Object detection on the road (traffic identification)
- Lane recognition to ensure the vehicle stays within its designated lane
- Speed limit monitoring based on traffic regulations
- Traffic signal recognition and responding to traffic signals
- Steering control for smooth navigation and turns
Virtual Drive System
One of the major breakthroughs is the successful implementation of a virtual drive system in Karachi, Pakistan. Research students Inzamam and Aleema highlighted that AI and robotics were used to test drive the car in a virtual environment. This helps in:
Analysis of different road conditions
- Analyzing correct AI decision-making power
- Improving response times in real-world challenges
Key Benefits of the Project
The benefits include:
- Enhanced road safety and reduce human error and accidents
- Increase AI-driven decision-making for better traffic management on roads
- Increasing Pakistan’s role in AI and robotics research
- Boosting local Pakistani tech innovations
- Reducing fuel consumption
- Integrating electric vehicles supporting eco-friendly transport
Future Prospects & Challenges for Short-Term
- Require the next 6 months for more precision
- AI software development specifically for cars
- Increase object detection
- Increase navigation algorithm
Future Prospects & Challenges Long-Term Vision
- Boosting autonomous driving
- Government collaborations for a policy framework
- Explore commercial apps for logistics
Challenges for Pakistan’s First AI-Powered Driverless Car Project
The project faces some hurdles:
- Regulatory framework to govern driverless vehicles in Pakistan
- Infrastructure limitations and the need for smart roads
- Requirement of AI-friendly traffic systems
- Public acceptance of AI-driven transportation is safe
Government & Institutional Support
The National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) at NED University is AI research center among 9 others established by the federal government. This is to make sure that Pakistan has a broader vision of promoting AI and smart technology solutions in transportation.
